“I think the potatoes are done, you’ve been mashing them for the last 20 minutes. Why don’t you go tell the guys to have a seat at the table?” my mom says, interrupting my daydreaming.

“Are the potatoes peeled?” my mom asks.

“Yeah, I got them all. Do I have to stay for dinner, it’s so boring?” I say.

“Yes, you know the deal.”

“Ok, then can I go to my room after we eat, I have homework?” I say.

“That’s fine.”

I push a hair out of my eyes and smell the starchy potatoes on my fingers as they move through the air. I did not want to sit around with adults who are more than twice my age and listen to them try to have small talk when there is really nothing interesting to say to each other. Why would this guy care to meet me anyway, it's just about appearances and keeping my dad happy.

“Em.J, please, you can do this, you can get better. A lot of people will themselves into good health. Why can’t you?” He’s whispering, he thinks I’m asleep, although I hear every word of his pleading. He thinks he’s pep-talking my brain because he wouldn’t want me to hear him being this desperate. Normally he is positive, but we are nearing the end so he is doing anything he can.

I slowly crack my eyes open just enough to see him holding my hand beside me. He’s sitting at my bedside, I could hear in his voice that he was trying not to cry. He won’t, he never does. He has to be tough, for me, for us, just because he is the man. That’s how he thinks, that’s how he cares, that’s how strong and not strong he is.
